About Us

The Department of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), was established in 2003 as the Surgical-Based Department. Since its inception, the department has been committed to providing top-tier medical education, research, and clinical services. Over the years, it has evolved into a cornerstone of the Faculty, offering comprehensive surgical training programs that blend theoretical knowledge with practical experience.

Situated in Sabah, the department leverages its strategic location to address the unique healthcare needs of the region. It boasts a team of highly skilled surgeons and dedicated academic staff who are passionate about advancing the field of surgery through innovative research and high-quality patient care. The department's curriculum is designed to equip medical students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in various surgical disciplines, fostering a new generation of competent and compassionate surgeons.

Surgical service is one of the major services provided by Hospital UMS. The department of surgery consists of specialised professionals providing evidence-based medical management. The aim is to provide good quality clinical services to improve patient outcomes at Hospital UMS and generally in the State of Sabah by complementing existing services. The department will provide optimal care and appropriate therapeutic interventions to the patients guided through outcome-based monitoring to achieve realistic goals.

Moreover, the Department of Surgery at UMS is actively involved in collaborative research projects, both locally and internationally, aiming to push the boundaries of surgical science and improve patient outcomes. Its commitment to excellence is reflected in its continuous efforts to enhance educational methodologies, integrate cutting-edge technologies, and uphold the highest standards of surgical practice. The department policy is to standardise patient management based on evidence-based practice, acceptable guidelines and ethically-driven interventions.

  5. To deliver optimum surgical care through multidisciplinary teamwork.
  6. To promote standardised clinical documentation for good clinical practice and long-term record keeping.
  7. To be the first teaching hospital in Borneo that delivers advanced technology ­based surgical interventions.
  8. To work collaboratively with governmental and non-governmental agencies in improving clinical competencies and enhancing patient outcomes.

Our Services

Outpatient Consultations
Providing specialist surgical consultations and follow-up care for patients in an outpatient setting especially issues related to general surgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery.
